6 Tips For Buying Gift Cards

Staten Island’s only community-based commercial bank

shares advice about shopping for plastic

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Gift cards can be a great solution for friends and family during the holidays. Victory State Bank would like to help you make informed decisions when making your purchase. The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following:

  • Buy from sources you know and trust. Avoid buying gift cards from online auction sites, because the cards may be counterfeit or may have been obtained fraudulently.
  • Read the fine print before you buy. Is there a fee to buy the card? If you buy a card by phone or online, are there shipping and handling fees? If you don't like the terms and conditions, buy elsewhere.
  • See whether any fees will be deducted from the card after you purchase it.
  • Inspect the card before you buy it. Verify that none of the protective stickers have been removed. Make sure that the codes on the back of the card haven't been scratched off to reveal a PIN number. Report any damaged cards to the store selling the cards.
  • Give the recipient your original receipt so they can verify the card's purchase in case it is lost or stolen.
  • Consider the financial condition of the retailer or restaurant.
    • If you buy a card from a company that files for bankruptcy or goes out of business, the card may be worth less than you had anticipated.
    • If the business closes a store near the recipient, it may be hard to find another location where the card can be used.
    • A company that files for bankruptcy may honor its gift cards, or a competitor may accept the card. Call the company or its competitor to find out. Even if the company is not redeeming gift cards now, check back with them periodically; they may start redeeming cards at a later date

6 Ways To Ease Your Holiday Budget Worries

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Holiday shopping can be both emotionally and financially stressful. Victory State Bank would like to remind you that a bit of planning can go a long way.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends the following tips to help ease your holiday budget worries:

Start by creating a holiday spending plan. Decide how much you can afford to spend this season. Include gifts, travel, parties, decorations, and any other holiday expenses. Consider discussing the plan with your family members. Look at how much you’ll earn between now and the holidays and determine how much you’ll need to set aside each paycheck to save the amount you need.

Make a list of the people you’re giving gifts. Decide how much you can spend on each one. If you have specific gifts in mind for each person, start comparing prices online and keep an eye out for discounts and sales.

Keep track of what you spend. If you find that you don’t need to spend as much as you thought in some categories, shift the extra funds to others. Or, save the money and give yourself the gift of a head start in the New Year.

Avoid impulse purchases. Instead, make a note of the product, where you saw it and how much it was. Consult your spending plan, and, if there’s room, return for the purchase. Using cash, like three quarters of Americans say they do for most of their holiday purchases, can also help you avoid splurges, as well as potentially costly fees or interest from debit cards, credit cards, layaway, or store financing.

Leave your credit cards at home unless you know you need them for a specific purchase and you have a specific plan to repay the debt.

Check the details when purchasing a gift card. Any fees that may be imposed in connection with the card will be provided on or with the card. Dormancy, inactivity and service fees (that is, fees for using or not using the card) are not allowed unless you don’t use the card for a year. If the card has an expiration date for the funds, it will also be listed on the card.

Beware of Car-Sale Telemarketing Scam,

Warns Staten Island Business Bank

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Please allow Victory State Bank to set up the following scenario: You want to sell your car without any hassles for a fair price. So you place an ad on a community website hoping for a quick sale. Shortly thereafter, you get a call from what sounds like an auto company. For a fee, the company promises to put you in touch with a buyer. If your car isn’t sold, they promise to refund your money. So you go ahead and pay the fee, and wait for the company to present a buyer for your car.

The catch? According to a recent case settled by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the auto company’s claims are false. There are no buyers, and there is no refund. It’s just another scam designed to bilk consumers.

Steer clear of telemarketing scams related to selling a car by following these tips:

    • Resist making an immediate decision when someone cold calls you in response to an ad you placed.Scam telemarketers are likely to use high-pressure tactics to get you give them money.
    • Research a company before paying a fee for their service.Go online and use a search engine to find out what the company track record is. Look for any complaints that might signal a red flag.
    • Get the specifics of the service you’re paying for in writing.Ask for a copy of the company policy and terms of the service on paper, and make sure you read and understand the fine print before agreeing to it or signing anything.
    • Register your home and mobile phone numbers with theNational Do Not Call Registry. Although it won’t stop all unsolicited telemarketing calls, it will stop most. If your number is on the registry and you still get calls, they’re likely to be from scammers ignoring the law.
    • Report fraud. If you suspect a company is scamming you after having promised a service and not delivering, file a complaint with the FTC.

Victory State Bank Reminds You of Your Credit Rights

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --Victory State Bank would like to remind you that the Credit Repair Organization Act (CROA) makes it illegal for credit repair companies to lie about what they can do for you, and to charge you before they've performed their services.

  • This law, which is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, requires credit repair companies to explain:
    • Your legal rights in a written contract that also details the services they'll perform
    • Your three day right to cancel without any charge
    • How long it will take to get results
    • The total cost you will pay
    • Any guarantees
  • What if a credit repair company you hired doesn't live up to its promises? You have some options.
    • You can sue them in federal court for your actual losses or for what you paid them, whichever is more.
    • You can seek punitive damages — money to punish the company for violating the law.
    • You can join other people in a class action lawsuit against the company, and if you win, the company has to pay your attorney's fees.
