Rebate Offers

Staten Island’s only community-based business bank warns against rebate offers that may be scams

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Rebate offers can be irresistible to consumers, slashing the price of consumer goods at the time of purchase or promising partial or full reimbursements after the purchase.

Some manufacturers and retailers entice shoppers with instant cash rebates that can be redeemed immediately at the checkout counter.

But most rebates are of the mail-in variety. They require consumers to pay the full cost of an item at the time purchase, then to send documentation to the manufacturer or retailer to receive a rebate by mail.

The documentation required generally includes the original sales receipt, UPC code, rebate slip, and the customer's name, address and telephone number. In most cases, this paperwork must be sent to the manufacturer or retailer within 30 days of the purchase. Consumers generally receive their rebates up to 12 weeks later.

But the Federal Trade Commission cautions consumers against being "baited" by rebates that never arrive or arrive far later than promised. By law, companies are required to send rebates within the time frame promised, or if no time is specified, within a "reasonable" time. "Reasonable" in this case often is interpreted as within 30 days.

When purchasing a product that offers a rebate, the FTC encourages consumers to:

    • Follow the instructions on the rebate form and enclose all required documentation in the envelope when filing for a rebate.
    • Make a copy of all paperwork to be mailed when applying for a rebate. It's the only record a consumer will have of the transaction if anything goes wrong.
    • Contact the company if the rebate doesn't arrive within the time promised.
    • If the rebate never arrives or arrives late, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, the state Attorney General or the local Better Business Bureau.

Spring Break Road Trips

Staten Island’s only community-based commercial bank gives you tips for saving gas money on your spring break road trip

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Hitting the highway on a road trip this spring? If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few tips from the FTC to help you save gas money.

Cha-ching, you just saved some change. Now you can spend that money on something fun during your trip.

These tips make sense whether you’re driving across the country or just across town:

    • Do some spring-cleaning in your car and take out stuff you won’t need on your trip. Extra weight in the trunk can reduce fuel economy.
    • Trying to find the cheapest gas, but don’t know the area? No problem. There are a number of sites and apps that can help you find the least expensive gas stations on-the-go.
    • Slow down. Every five miles per hour over 60 costs you a quarter extra for a gallon of gas.
    • Turn off your engine if you’re parked and waiting — you’ll save fuel. That’s good for your wallet, and better for the environment

Beware of Cyber Criminals

Staten Island’s only community-based business bank warns against cyber fraud scams.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Victory State Bank, along with the FBI, reminds online shoppers to beware of cyber criminals who are out to steal money and personal information. Scammers use many techniques to defraud consumers, from phishing e-mails offering too good to be true deals on brand-name merchandise to offering quick cash to victims who will re-ship packages to additional destinations.

Here are some additional tips you can use to avoid becoming a victim of cyber fraud:

  • Do not respond to unsolicited (spam) e-mail.
  • Do not click on links contained within an unsolicited e-mail.
  • Be cautious of e-mail claiming to contain pictures in attached files; the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders. Scan the attachments for viruses if possible.
  • Avoid filling out forms contained in e-mail messages that ask for personal information.
  • Always compare the link in the e-mail to the link you are actually directed to and determine if they match and will lead you to a legitimate site.
  • Log on directly to the official website for the business identified in the e-mail instead of “linking” to it from an unsolicited e-mail. If the e-mail appears to be from your bank, credit card issuer, or other company you deal with frequently, your statements or official correspondence from the business will provide the proper contact information.
  • Contact the actual business that supposedly sent the e-mail to verify that the e-mail is genuine.
  • If you are requested to act quickly or there is an emergency that requires your attention, it may be a scam. Fraudsters create a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly.
  • Remember if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Fake Federal Calls

Staten Island’s only community-based commercial bank alerts you of federal phone scam.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Have you ever gotten one of these calls? Someone says they’re with a government agency or the sheriff’s office and threatens that you’ll be sued or arrested if you don’t pay a supposed debt.

If you get a call like this, you might be unsure of what to do. Here are some things you can be sure of:

  • Federal government agencies don’t ask people to send money for unpaid loans. If you still feel unsure, look up the official number of the agency the caller is pretending to represent so you can get the real story.
  • There’s no legitimate reason for someone to ask you to wire money or load a rechargeable money card as a way to pay back a debt.
  • Even if a debt is real, you have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If the debt is legitimate — but you think the collector may not be — contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Protect Your Passwords

Staten Island’s only community-based commercial bank reminds you of the importance of protecting your passwords.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Scammers, hackers, and identity thieves are looking to steal your personal information – and your money. But there are steps you can take to protect yourself, like keeping your computer software up-to-date and giving out your personal information only when you have a good reason.

Here are a few principles, according to the FTC, for creating strong passwords and keeping them safe:

    • The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack.  Use at least 10 characters; 12 is ideal for most home users.
    • Mix letters, numbers, and special characters.  Try to be unpredictable – don’t use your name, birthdate, or common words.
    • Don’t use the same password for many accounts.  If it’s stolen from you – or from one of the companies with which you do business – it can be used to take over all your accounts.
    • Don’t share passwords on the phone, in texts or by email.  Legitimate companies will not send you messages asking for your password.  If you get such a message, it’s probably a scam.
    • Keep your passwords in a secure place, out of plain sight.
