How A Small Business Can Save Money, Time
Staten Island commercial bank shares tips on being more efficient
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Inasmuch as a small business owner typically has limited time and money, making the most of both can benefit success and serenity.
Victory State Bank, Staten Island's only community-based business bank, contends that daily tasks don't necessarily have to drain finances, time and energy.
Putting a halt to never-ending to-do lists is among several ideas advocated by Melinda Emerson, whose “Become Your Own Boss in 12 Months” book has been well received.
Instead of such lists, she suggests setting priorities at the end of each day and then working to complete only five of them by 11 a.m. when the workday resumes.
The payoff is in being more selective about tasks and more effective in time management.
Turning to marketing, resources and time are limited here also. Emerson, aka SmallBizLady, her online persona, recommends picking a niche-target customer who can actually be reached.
“Don't just chase any customer you think has money,” she says. “Remember, if everyone can use your product or service, no one will.”
A business account where one-stop shopping is possible, such as at Sam's Club, not only can be a money-saver but also saves time, Emerson asserts. Membership can also access business services for human resources, payroll, payment processing and legal matters.
Using a timer when on social media is another of her pointers. These sites can consume huge blocks of time for a user who isn't strategic. Focus efforts on just one social site to build an online brand, she says.
Being disorganized is another time-killer. Looking for things on a laptop can waste time when files aren't organized. She's against storing everything on the desktop. Instead, “Create files by category and year, such as '2015 Contracts' to find things quickly.”
She also advocates having a backup system that uses cloud storage. “This way, you can work from anywhere and your files will be safe if something happens to your computer.”
Because running a small business is a full time job and then some, it pays to take easy steps for maximizing resources and making tasks less time-consuming, she says.
