Getting An Earlier Start To The Day
Staten Island commercial bank shares ideas on finding more hours
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The debate between being a morning person or a night person may never be totally settled.
Nevertheless, Victory State Bank, Staten Island's only community-based business bank, offers that an earlier start could be one way to add more to a day's productive time.
For some folks, waking up before sunrise may be an invitation to fade after lunchtime. And the bank says that's no way to struggle through the afternoon.
It might just be that the snooze button isn't always a welcome invention. To avoid its temptations, try moving the alarm clock far enough away from the bed so that it's necessary to stand up and walk to turn it off.
In some pointers compiled by the Hormel Foods Corp., Robert S. Rosenberg, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Centers of Prescott Valley and Flagstaff, Ariz., says "When you hit the snooze button repeatedly, you're fragmenting what little extra sleep you're getting, so it is of poor quality."
Promoting breakfasts called Compleats, which it says can be ready in 60 seconds, Hormel advocates a hearty fueling-up.
The company cites a January 2014 Penn Schoen Berland study showing that although nearly 85 percent of Americans believe breakfast is important, slightly more than half say they choose to skip it because they don't have enough time, would rather sleep in or don't like preparing it.
Powering up with protein is part of the recommended morning regimen. According to health.com, eggs – and even bacon – can be potent breakfast options to keep you going and give your body the energy it needs to get through the day, the company adds.
"Eggs are a great source of nutrients," Hormel quotes Mitch Kanter, Ph.D., executive director of the Egg Nutrition Center. "Just one egg contains 13 essential vitamins and minerals, high-quality protein and antioxidants."
For the last of the tips, at day's end, set an earlier bedtime. If you are a night owl by nature, but want to start your day sooner, gradually shift your bedtime earlier each night.
Once you find a time that allows you to wake up early and get through the day without feeling like you need a nap, Hormel says stick to it. The most productive early birds aren't sleep deprived. As Aristotle noted, "It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth and wisdom."
