Staten Island Family-Owned Enterprise Garners 2 Prestigious Awards
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Victory State Bank is particularly proud when a local Staten Island business makes good.
One such business – a family enterprise -- recently received two distinguished awards, within days of each other.
Steven J. Coppola, founder and head of APB Security Systems, Inc., was honored along with his daughter, Pamela Coppola, president of the Statewide Fire Corp. station monitoring facility, and his son, Steven M., president of Statewide Monitoring Corp. Each of the companies is a division of APB Security Systems.
On May 11, the Small Business Administration (SBA) New York District Office presented APB Security Systems and its respective companies with the “Jeffery Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award.” The distinction was presented during the 2012 National Small Business Week Awards Ceremony in Manhattan.
The Coppola companies readily met the award criteria: Evidence of success as measured by sales and profits; increased employment opportunities for family members and non-family members; demonstration of the potential necessary for long-term business success and economic growth, and voluntary efforts to strengthen family-owned businesses within the community.
Since its founding, 70 percent of APB Security Systems’ employees have chosen to remain a part of the company, a testament to the firm’s warm family environment.
The senior Coppola said he ensures client satisfaction by maintaining the integrity of his enterprise.
“What we promise, we deliver,” Coppola said. “And if we make a mistake, we correct it. We truly care about protecting the people. It’s not just putting another account on the line; it’s about protecting another family.”
Just four days prior to the SBA honor, the New York State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) presented APB Security Systems and its divisions with the “2012 New York State Small Business Development Center Growth Business of the Year Award.” The award was given at the SBDC staff-training conference in Suffern, N.Y.
Each of the Coppola companies grew in total revenue about 33 percent from 2010 to 2011.
During the award ceremony, the innovative trio was praised for their outstanding leadership skills in the security industry.
Dean Balsamini, director of the SBDC at the College of Staten Island, nominated the companies for both awards.
