Inventiveness Does Get Noticed

Staten Island business bank says innovation examples are instructive

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – When Product of the Year winners were announced last month, the 2015 list underscored the importance of innovation in reaching consumers.

Victory State Bank, Staten Island's only community-based commercial bank, asserts that new ideas from a business can spark interest in it, show leadership, and broaden its reach.

It's an instructive point for almost any business, suggests the bank, which has no ties to Product of the Year.

The 2015 Product of the Year (POY) title-holders, 30 in all, were selected in voting by more than 40,000 consumers in a national representative survey. Each gets to include a POY logo on its packaging.

Some this year's winners:

§  Dial Greek Yogurt Body Wash rethinks shower time with Greek Yogurt combined with body wash.

§  Easy snacking is facilitated by the spill-preventing Snackeez, intended to eliminate snack-related spills on a couch or in a car. The dishwasher-safe container holds a 16-ounce drink and a snack together in one place and seals to keep snacks fresh and not spill.

§  Burgers for pets is a new home-style dog treat called Milo's Kitchen Grilled Burger Bites, the Pet-Nutrition category winner made of beef, bacon and sweet potato.

§  A new take on a couple of longtime favorites is packaged as Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups, which took the Candy category.

§  Powder in a can is a quick and easy spray called Gold Bond Powder No Mess Powder Spray topping the Body Comfort and Relief category.

§  Gluten-free pizza was the Convenience Meals winner. LiveGfree Gluten-Free Pizza responds to the needs of people who have an intolerance for the protein composite found in wheat and related grains, including barley and rye.

§  Real food for babies marketed as Beech-Nut Naturals has no artificial preservatives and all-natural ingredients.

§  Virtually odorless paint from Benjamin Moore is called Natura Waterborne Interior Paint offered as a no-emissions alternative to conventional interior paints by going beyond zero VOC (volatile organic compounds).

§  Thin, flexible strips topping the Sensitivity Pain Relief category are Crest Sensi-Stop strips containing an active ingredient said to be used by dental professionals to provide targeted relief for sensitive teeth.

The complete list is available on the Winning Products page of the POY website.

POY was established 28 years ago. “Nearly 50,000 new packaged goods products are introduced each year,” said Rich Fryling, managing director, Product of the Year USA, in a press statement.

“The distinctive red Product of the Year logo placed on packages and in advertising helps these new innovative products standout to consumers, and our research shows that 44 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase a product recommended by 40,000 shoppers just like them.”

The national POY survey of consumers was conducted by TNS, described as a global leader in consumer research. TNS is part of Kantar, one of the world’s largest consultancy groups.
