Accelerating Public Awareness in April

Staten Island business bank cheers for proprietors' successes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Today gives us a double whammy: Not only is it April Fool's Day but, being Wednesday, it's also Hump Day. There likely will be short memories of both.

That's because Victory State Bank, Staten Island's only community-based commercial bank, sees a more fundamental reason to mark the date.

Yesterday, the year's first quarter became history. And that means looking past foolish pranks and groan-worthy references to dromedaries.

Beginning today, businesses are at the threshold of the progress they hope to achieve over the span of the next three quarters until year's end. In short, the race is on.

April needn't be what T.S. Eliot called the cruelest month in “The Waste Land.” In fact, the bank applauds owners who don't want the month to be a wasted opportunity.

Businesses can promote themselves in April, and avenues exist among the many ways the month has been designated for awareness and attention to recurrent campaigns, initiatives, merchandising themes, and consumer topics.

As an example, a popular calendar of commemorative designations might even seem to suggest tie-ins and promotions, given its lineup of selected ways April has been earmarked. To wit:

African-American Women's Fitness Month, Alcohol Awareness, Astronomy Month, Autism Awareness Month, Bereaved Spouses Awareness Month, Cancer Control Month, Car Care Month (which also occurs in the fall), Card and Letter Writing Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month, Confederate History Month, Couple Appreciation Month.

And: Customer Loyalty Month, Decorating Month, Defeat Diabetes Month, Distracted Driving Awareness, Donate Life Month, Emotional Overeating Awareness, Fresh Florida Tomato Month, Humor Month, Informed Woman Month, Jazz Appreciation Month, Knuckles Down Month.

Additionally, Landscape Architecture Month, Mathematics Awareness, Month of the Young Child, Occupational Therapy Month, Pecan Month, Pest Management Month, Pet First Aid Awareness, Pharmacists' War on Diabetes, Poetry Month, Prevention of Animal Cruelty, Rebuilding Month.

Also: Rosacea Awareness Month, School Library Month, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) Education and Awareness, Soyfoods Month, Straw Hat Month, Stress Awareness, Women's Eye Health and Safety Month, Workplace Conflict Awareness, Youth Sports Safety Month.

In addition to these tabulations there are several other commemorative compilations, many of them listing individual days having their own focus. Some of these list historical dates, and there are varying assortments of anniversaries. Most are easily discovered in online searches.
