Looking for Work? Make Sure Employment Agency is Licensed

Commercial Bank on Staten Island warns of employment agency scams

If you are job hunting and plan on dealing with an employment agency, first make certain the agency is legit, advises Victory State Bank.

Staten Island’s only community-based business bank is addressing a warning from the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) that states, “Too many employment agencies take advantage of people who are looking for a job.”

According to the DCA, some agencies charge upfront fees, guarantee employment, send you to jobs that don’t exist, make you pay for training, such as security guard or OSHA training or bartending classes, in order to get a job.

All of these things tactics are illegal.

Victory State Bank shares the DCA’s advice in telling job seekers to check an employment agency’s license status and history of compliance before moving forward. This may be done by visiting the DCA online at nyc.gov/consumers, or by calling 311.
