Thanksgiving Thoughts From Victory State Bank
In October 1621, the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony celebrated the autumn harvest with a three-day feast.
Tomorrow, Nov. 26, Americans across the United States will keep the tradition alive with a gathering of family and friends in an expression of thankfulness.
Victory State Bank, Staten Island only community-based commercial bank, wishes you and your loved ones a joyous and safe Thanksgiving.
Back in 1621, Governor William Bradford invited the chief of the Wampanoag tribe, Massasoit, to join the fifty colonists who had survived the harsh winter. The Native American leader brought ninety of his tribesmen to the feast.
The celebration included athletic contests, a military review led by Miles Standish, and a feast on foods such as wild turkeys, duck, geese, venison, lobsters, clams, bass, corn, green vegetables, and dried fruits.
In 1841, Dr. Alexander Young contended that this harvest celebration was the "first Thanksgiving," and the origin of an American tradition. This interpretation gained such widespread acceptance that other contenders for the distinction faded into obscurity.
This year, as we prepare to gather for Thanksgiving celebrations with loved ones, it is our hope that each and everyone of us will reach out to those in need, not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.
May the coming days bring comfort to those affected by the hand of terrorism, and bring us closer to the destruction of those seeking to destroy world peace.
